Harold Harry Artis was born April 17, 1903 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Gray Benjamin Artis, (1864-1909) and Victoria (Jackson) Artis, (1870-1924). Harold was the sixth of seven children of Gray and Victoria. None of Harold’s brothers, Samuel Nickerson, (1887-1944), James “Oakey” Artis, (1894-???), Clarence Artis, (1896-1972), Clifford Artis, (1898-1979), Alfred Artis, (1906-1919) or his sister Mabel Artis, (1900-1967), had any surviving children. We are the only descendants of Gray and Victoria. Harold died on May 3, 1975 from lung cancer.
Harold had several occupations growing up, his first title some recall was a Porta for Blocks Department store in downtown Indianapolis. He soon established Eastside Landscaping Company in 1956 and was the sole owner and later expanded his landscaping and tree service to include the sale of flowers, fruits and vegetables grown from his gardens. He changed the name of his business to The Artis Greenhouse – 2738 N. Keystone Ave. The Artis Barbershop soon followed. Harold rightly was an entrepreneur as he owned land on both sides of Keystone from 27th to 28th Street.

Not sure when this picture was taken. Standing next to Harold is his older brother Clarence.
